A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck northern Chile near the border with Argentina, the US Geological Survey reported.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
However, later reports indicated damage to homes ranging from minor to complete destruction.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 45 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama, a tourist hub on the edge of the northern desert.
The depth of the quake was 117 kilometers, which likely reduced the intensity of the shaking.
The deeper the earthquake, the less destructive the tremor tends to be at the surface.
Chile’s president stated that his government is closely monitoring the situation in the affected area.
The earthquake did not trigger any tsunami alarms.
Footage has emerged online showing rocks falling onto the highway connecting the cities of Calama and Tocopilla.
Local authorities also reported road closures in the area.
Experts noted that tremors from deeper earthquakes are typically felt over a wider area.
The earthquake shook six provinces, followed by at least a dozen aftershocks.
Despite its significant size and the large number of fallen objects, it is not considered a high-intensity earthquake.
Emergency services were promptly mobilized to assess and respond to the damage.
Residents in the affected areas were advised to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols.
Some buildings in San Pedro de Atacama sustained structural damage.
