The Alec Baldwin trial began Wednesday morning with an opening statement from prosecutor Erlinda Johnson. After she slammed Baldwin for /”playing make-believe,/” she said she believes Baldwin lied about not pulling the trigger of the gun used to kill “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Johnson continued to say that the gun didn’t malfunction on its own, claiming the trigger had to be pulled. The prop gun was later destroyed during FBI evidence testing. Baldwin’s defense rebutted the state’s claim in their opening statement, claiming Baldwin was doing his job as an actor and had no idea a live round was in his prop gun. The prosecution kicked off their case by calling first responders to the stand and having them testify about the day they responded to the movie set.

Baldwin’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. A judge will rule on these issues after hearing motions from the prosecution and Baldwin’s defense. Baldwin was indicted on one count of involuntary manslaughter in January for the death of 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
