In Lipova Lazne, local resident Pavel Bily said it was the worst he’d seen since 1997.
The fire service reported evacuating 1,900 people by Sunday morning, with many roads impassable. A quarter of a million homes were without power due to high winds and rain. Czech police said they were looking for three people who were in a car that fell into the river Staric near Lipova Lazne, 235 km east of Prague on Saturday.
Authorities are on high alert as more rain is expected. Martin Puta, Regional Council President of Liberec Region, warned of rising water levels in streams and rivers. Jan Hardbolec, Director of the Fire Rescue Service, reported over 200 fallen trees cleared in 24 hours.
In Jesenik, residents were seen filling sandbags from playground sand pits and placing them along flooded roads.
